JALG Design Studio's Mid-Century Minimalist TV Stand Honoured with Red Dot Design Award
With an existing presence in Copenhagen, Tokyo, Seoul and Tallinn, JALG Design Studio is proud to announce its arrival in the UK market, offering consumers a stylish fusion of Scandinavian design aesthetics and earthquake-proof functionality.
Co-founded on Etsy in 2016 by Estonian designers Veiko Kallas and Argo Männiste, JALG Design Studio already has 20,000 customers across 40 countries. JALG's signature product, a mid-century minimalist TV stand also called JALG (Estonian for ‘leg’), serves as a testament to the studio's ethos. In the 2024 Red Dot Design Awards, JALG was awarded with a prestigious Red Dot.
Combining Kallas' understanding of furniture and wood technology and his creative eye honed as a photographer with Männiste’s longstanding career in product design, JALG Design Studio prides itself on crafting furniture that embodies simplicity, functionality, and aesthetic excellence.
‘The calmness of Scandinavian forests was our starting point for the design,’ says co-founder and creative director Veiko Kallas. ‘We wanted to create a strong design impact with minimal resources – and make something that would last for a lifetime. We chose oak, walnut and birch and every piece is made by hand to respect the centuries old tradition of Estonian wood craftsmanship.’
With 16 options available – including the modernist Birch Amber Yellow, the classic Walnut and the Oak YakiSugi, which references the Japanese method of preserving wood by charring it with fire – the JALG’s simple, functional design offers consumers the opportunity to transform their living spaces with ease.
‘We believe that beautiful objects bring a calm and positive energy to a space – something that seems to be really needed these days,’ says Kallas. ‘We’ve learned from both Japanese and Scandinavian design, and we see this in how our customers use the stands; how they can instantly change a room to feel more minimalist, clean, and pulled-together.’
But it’s not all about clean lines and aesthetics – when something so elegant has been designed to hold something as weighty and valuable as a television, practicality is just as important as beauty. Thankfully, due to their customer base in Japan, they have been able to get feedback about just how stable the stands are. ‘Our Japanese partners have told us that the stands don’t fall in earthquakes; instead, they just walk a little bit!’ says Kallas.
In addition to its signature range, JALG Design Studio has recently introduced a new line of acrylic TV stands, inspired by mid-century Space Age design.
