Surface View Launches 'Timeless Classics' Inspired by the V&A’s Decorative Wallpaper's
Surface View launches Timeless Classics, a new range of four contemporary designs, inspired by the V&A’s significant holdings of decorative wallpapers.
The new range showcases the beauty of the original artworks, preserved in the V&A’s Prints and Drawings department, whilst adding a contemporary twist by exaggerating the patina of age and elegant dilapidation. Timeless Classics spotlights the intrinsic beauty of these wallpapers to create a range of modern designs for murals, blinds and window film.
‘Working from archival documents, we have collaborated with the V&A team to reinterpret traditional wallpaper patterns and create a bold, contemporary style for today’s interiors. Using innovative techniques and by layering textures and ombré effects that emulate the peeling and sun-bleached walls of bygone eras, the classic decorative papers have been transformed.’ - Victoria Blair – Brand Development Consultant, Surface View
The four designs are available as wallpaper murals, ceramic tile murals and roller blinds, in a range of colourways from contemporary neutrals to rich jewel and midnight tones. All repeat horizontally and are available to the customer’s exact scale and size requirements, meaning there is no wastage.
Uppark Trellis
Based on a portion of wallpaper from Uppark House, West Sussex, this beautiful trellis design reworks the original 17th century artwork onto a painterly, ombré background, reminiscent of fresco plasterwork. This modern take on a historic wallpaper style is available in four new colours of Limestone, Slate Blue, Forest Green and Bordeaux Red.
Cranford Damask
Based on a Rococo-style wallpaper from the Victorian era, Cranford Damask is a loose and flowing design of stylised poppies and foliage. The original document, found at Cranford House in Middlesex, has a velvety effect like damask fabric or flock.
This new interpretation of an ornate and timeless pattern takes these fabric-like textures and builds on them to create something completely new. Two dramatic colourways; Onyx Black and Antique Bronze showcase the subtle tonal effects of the original, whilst the remaining colourways of Petrol Blue, Sandstone, Dove Grey, Pale Linen, Mist Blue and Celedon Green embody a timeworn-look and bring a contemporary air to any wall with gentle ombré shading.
Lydiard Damask
Originally a silk, damask fabric, this pattern was often hung in England’s most revered stately homes throughout the Georgian era. The stylised acanthus leaves, feathers, fruit and flowers featured in this iconic design were later produced as a wallpaper in the Victorian period. Lydiard Damask is based on a fragment originally saved from the ballroom at Lydiard House in Wiltshire.
Available in seven colourways, three of which, in deep hues of Vermillion Red, Charcoal and Mulberry, show the pattern in a traditional manner. In a contemporary re-interpretation of this pattern five colourways of Cinnabar Red, Chalk Pink, Tyrian Purple and Smoke Grey take the pattern and gently ‘wear’ the design away to reveal a faded, crackled texture, similar to the natural ageing of wallpaper.
Paris Plasterwork
This 19th century design was originally created as a ceiling wallpaper and an alternative to costly tapestries and decorative moulds. Reworking the original design to repeat horizontally, Paris Plasterwork captures the decorative wallpaper in a new format – fading from full colour at the bottom to a paired back off-white at the top. Choose from three colourways, Taupe, Sage Green and Wedgewood Blue.
